Whitefish run
 (United States)

I have heard that the whitefish are gathering near the piers in western Michigan and can be caught by jigging. Can anyone tell me about tactics, tackle, and lures for this type of fishing.

Are these fish foul hooked or can you get them to bite a lure?

Terry

Re: Whitefish run

White fish are caught best in the early eavning 4:00 PM to light in the morning.  I have taken my limit before 4:00 PM once and a while.  But mainly after 4 in the afternoon.

12 Fish is the limit. BUT THEY MUST BE CAUGHT IN THE MOUTH, snagged / foul hooked fish must be released, DNR officers are usally standing by for people who don't pay attention to the rules.  Fines are pretty stiff.

I use Hopkins spoons and my own variation of a Hopkins spoon. Other spoons used are Swedish Pimple, Jigging Rapalas, Lees spoons are real popular also.  I use 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz spoons and Power Pro line in the 8 to 10 lb class.

Make sure you have a good light so you can see to net your fish, Speeking of net you will need a 12 foot net to get to the water to net your fish.

Best place is by the Coast Guard Station, Go early because there is always a crowd of people there.
