Coming to Grand Haven in July, what gear should I bring?
 (United States)

I am staying on the Grand River with access to Spring Lake. I'll have a canoe to use in the Grand, any tips on what I should bring? Are the Smallmouth down that far or should I expect Salmon and Trout? Any idea what they will be eating in July?

Thanks for the help!

I never fish up the river much, mostly the big lake.  But that time of year you should not expect any trout or salmon.  You should be able to get about everything else, it may be tough fishing from a canoe, you may want to get into one of the bayous, there is usually a strong current in the river.  If you might be interested in going for salmon, I can probably find room on my boat, all I need is money for the gas!

Thank you for the offer Fishbyte... I'll keep you posted on our plan as it's my bro-in-law's place. He might have a fishing plan already and to your point, I think the house is on a bayou so we should be ok. The house has a dock and we also have a motor boat, was thinking Spring Lake could provide some opportunities. When you say, "anything else" I assume you to mean Smallmouth and Largemouth as they seem to be prevelent in the waters. I know how to fish for those, anything else I should prepare for?

Since you have a boat & motor you should be all set for bass fishing!  I hear that Spring Lake and some of the bayous hold some huge bass.  If you would like to try for salmon, let me know and I'm sure we can work something out!  r2098@yahoo.com

If you are going to be fishing on Spring Lake and local bayous,  you should be pretty well set by bringing standard bass fishing gear. Lures that will work well are crank baits (trolled or cast) and blade baits (Silver Buddies, Cicadias, etc.) The crankbaits come into play by casting the structure, such as docks, points etc. Trolling the crankbaits can be productive by following the 14 ft. depth of water contour and trolling in the 1.5 to 2 mph area.
The blade baits can be cast and jigged back in from 10 to 20 ft. of water. they may also be trolled. Different depths can be covered with the blades by letting varied amounts of line out while trolling.
Fishing Spring Lake, you can expect to catch almost anything. In July the walleye will be around the points and are especially active just before and just after dark. Bass are present (both large and smallmouths) Trolling or casting will take them. Try some rubber worms, Texas or wacky rigged.
Northern pike, white bass, freshwater drum (up to 18 pounds) and some real monster flathead catfish (up to 30 pounds) are some more possibilities, while fishing Spring Lake.
If you are interested, we have a real laid back contest every Tuesday evening on Spring Lake. The primary target fish are Freshwater Drum (sheepshead)  and we also pay for secondary fish like walleye, bass, catfish, etc.

You can contact me directly at (tforge1943@yahoo.com) for more info on the contest or more tips on inland fishing in this area.

Good fishing,
Terry Ankelen

Thank you for your time Terry... that was more comprehensive than I could've asked for.

I do most of my freshwater bass fishing in the rivers of VA. and the lakes in NC. I am going to hope my traditional tactics (carolina rig, slip rig and jiggin) for Large and Smalls. The Walleye sound like they could provide a good evening out and I'll give your cranks and blades a shot for sure.

I really appreciate your time again and I look forward to my fishing experience. Will probably be in a canoe in the bayou most mornings when the kids get up (6am - 8am) so hope I land a few of Michigan's finest. Take care, Jason
