VHS
 (N/A)
Has anyone out there seen any sign of VHS in our Lake Michigan fish yet? I have been told that the symptoms are: Red or bloody appearing fins, eyes or bleeding from the gills. If anyone out there catches a fish with these symptoms, please let me know.

Re: VHS

Thanks Skamaniak,
VHS is a new viral desease that is making an appearance in the Great Lakes. It's symptoms include bloody fins eyes and gills and it is deadly to gamefish. We are hoping that it will not develop into a large scale killer of our fish. More information can be found by doing a search on Viral hemorrhagic septicemia or go to: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/animal_health/content/printable_
version/ia_VHS_Great_Lakes.pdf
Hopefully this killer desease will not manifest itself in Lake Michigan but we all should be on the lookout for it and report any fish with these symptoms to the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources.
The description of the fish that you saw could be VHS but biological testing is necessary to determine that it is indeed VHS.
Thanks again for the information.
Terry
