Jon,

Great post! This is the type of information that we hoped to promote on the discussion board.

We are hoping that anglers, just starting out will begin to ask questions and post like yours will be a big help.

The tips and help portion of the discussion board can be used for explanation of rigging and set-ups. Even basic rigs like free and fixed sliders, planer board set-ups and cut bait rigs can be explained and graphics can be inserted to further describe the rigs.

Thanks Jon. Keep them coming.

I am new to the sport of Lake Michigan salmon fishing. I noticed the (Top Five Lures) posts with great interest. I noticed that the Stinger Scorpion was mentioned quite a bit. That is a very small spoon, isn't it? How do you rig it for large salmon? Any further tips about basic rigs would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Sid

Re: Top 5 Lures/Rigs of 2005?!?!?

Hey Sid, I think you may have misread the Stinger "Stingray" for the Stinger "Scorpion".  The Stinger "Stingray" is mentioned above quite often and has become very popular and effective since it's release two years ago.  The "Stingray" is a size inbetween the regular-sized Stinger and the Magnum Stinger.  The "Stingray" size has quickly become a favorite of many fishermen on Lake Michigan.

You are correct the Stinger "Scorpion" is a very small spoon often used for Walleye fishing on Lake Erie and other places.  I personally do use the Stinger "Scorpion" spoons in the Spring on Lake Michigan for Brown Trout and Salmon.  The "Scorpion" spoons work well on dipsy divers and lead core when fishing the sand bars or very shallow water in the Spring.  They also work well in front of the piers and offshore when the water is cold and the fish are high in the water column.  I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Top 5 Lures/Rigs of 2005?!?!?

Hey ghsurfer, The most effective flashers in our area over the last few years have been the Dreamweaver Spin Doctor and the Bechhold FishCatcher.  This last season we also had excellent luck with Luhr Jensen 11" (Size 3) Coyote Flashers.

Here are a few of the most consistent and top producing Flasher/Fly Combos over the last few years:

1) Dreamweaver 8 inch and 10 inch Spin Doctor (70023-Green Fishscale/Crush Glow) with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Fly, Citron Rapture Fly, or Green No-See-Um Rapture Fly.

2) Dreamweaver 8 inch and 10 inch Spin Doctor (70032-Emerald Fishscale/Crush Glow) with a Wild Fern Rapture Fly, Hypnotist Rapture Fly, or Atomic Green Glow HorseFly.

3) Dreamweaver 8 inch and 10 inch Spin Doctor (70007-Blue Holo/Crush Glow) with a Blue Bubble Rapture Fly, Blue Bubble Action Fly, Blue Fern Rapture Fly, or Blue Hypnotist Rapture Fly.

4) Luhr Jensen 11" (Size 3) Coyote Flasher (White/Pearl Fishscale) with a Snow Ghost HorseFly, Green Dude Rapture Fly, or Little Bride Rapture Fly.

5) Dreamweaver Spin Doctor and Bechhold FishCacther 8 inch (White/Double Crush Glow and White/Double Pearl Glow) with any fly always seems to work.  Some of the better flies have been the Hit Man No-See-Um Rapture Fly, Mirage Green Action Fly, Hypnotist LG Rapture Fly, plus many others.  Basically any fly can match well with these flashers.

Overall, We try to match the Fly of choice with a Flasher that looks very similar in color.  These are just a few examples as many others have their days as well.  Dark and Light Green Plastic Spin Doctors and Bechhold FishCatchers with Crushed Glow are also very effective.  The Hypnotist LG Rapture Fly has been our top producing Fly for the last 5 years and always seems to produce on many different flashers.  I hope this helps and if you have any other questions let me know.

Hey ghsurfer, The best place to buy Great Lakes Tackle was Steve's Bait and Tackle, but he is no longer in business.  The only place in Grand Haven now is Lakeview Marine and Tackle.  They do have a good assortment of Flashers and Flies, plus much more.  The West Marine store in Grand Haven was going to get more Great Lakes Tackle but I don't know what happened or if they ever did.  I hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions.

Jon,

Nice to see your still around. I was hoping with the new sight you would continue to post reports. The information you provided last year was a tremendous help to me and my crew.

I noticed last year that spoons out produced attractors and flies later into the summer than usual. Usually spoons are better earlier in the season with a few attractors and flies mixed in. Then it seems after the 4th of July it's just the opposite with attractors and flies out producing spoons. I didn't get a good attractor and fly bite until August.

Did you notice the same thing?

Thanks

Chris E  (boat "Emily Be" port Grand Haven)

Re: Top 5 Lures/Rigs of 2005?!?!?

Hey Chris, I am glad the reports and information helped you out.  We have received many thanks and compliments from people who have said the reports have really helped them on specific trips and overall.  I will continue to answer any questions on this board that anyone may have.  We would like to get more people onto the board with discussions and questions, etc.  I will also be posting fishing reports, information, etc., throughout the year like in the years past all summer long.

This past year was an excellent year for spoons like you stated.  This was also a great year for Plugs.  We fished a lot more spoons than in years past after the Flasher/Fly bite started off very slow.  The Fly bite was a lot better in late July and August like you said.  It was not very good at all until later on in the year, unlike previous years.  The spoon bite continued to be very good for long periods of time throughout the summer, so that was what we stuck with.  Plugs were also excellent as the water stayed cold and we were able to fish close to the harbor for long periods of time throughout the year and through the Muskegon Tournament.  That was very unusual.  I hope this helps and I am glad the reports and information really helped you out.  That is the whole goal of the reports; to help everyone who doesn't fish everyday catch more fish when they can go.  If you have any other questions let me know.  Thanks a lot.
