As the season is winding down the there are still some 4 year old fish to be caught. With the recent northwest west you can expect the kings to move in to shallow water for the final run. So gear up your plugs and paddles for what could be the last push of the mature fish. Silver horde double glow plugs and dreamweaver paddles have been the most effective in the muddy water.

Offshore fishing is producing some smaller kings, steelhead and a couple lake trout. Orange spoons such as the shanster, fireball, double org. crush, org. sparkle have been efeective as well as the mixed veggie and tangerine. The best paddles continue to be the Glo Frog Racer and pearl fish scale with white or green flies such as the green bubble, hypnotist, pickle sunshine, snow ghost, little bride, and snowman.

Pier fish should continue to get better as the week progresses with the water cooling.

Fishing is extremely good out of Grand Haven right now!  Limit catches of King Salmon are occurring with an occasional Steelhead or Lake Trout being taken as well.  These catches are the biggest and heaviest we have seen this season out of Grand Haven.

The best water has been 130-170 feet of water, with the best action coming around 140-160 feet.  Downriggers 85-160 feet down, wire divers back 150-280 feet, braid divers back 250-300 feet, 13-20 colors of lead core, and 300 ft.-450 ft. of copper are producing fish as well.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size and Rapture Trolling Flies with Pro-Troll flashers.  The flasher/fly bite has been getting better and better everyday, so we have been using less and less spoons each day.  Consistent spoons have been the Glo Dolphin Stingray, Wiggle Stingray, Gator Stingray, and Mixed Veggies Stingray.  The best fly by far has been the Oceana Rapture Trolling Fly.  This has been working every morning behind an 11 inch White/Pearl Fishscale HotChip flasher, 8 inch Blue/Blue Hologram/Crushed Glow ProChip flasher, and an 8 inch White/Double Crushed Glow ProChip flasher.  Other hot combinations have been the 8 inch Green/Glow ProChip with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly, 8 inch White/Green Hologram/Crushed Glow ProChip with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly, and the 8 inch Natural Born Killer Stinger ProChip flasher with a Hypnotist LG Rapture Trolling Fly.  Other flies that have been working are the Hit Man No-See-Um Rapture Trolling Fly, Last Supper Rapture Trolling Fly, Green No-See-Um Rapture Trolling Fly, and the Frosted Fern Rapture Trolling Fly, with these all being fished behind an 8 inch White/Double Crushed or Slick Glow ProChip flasher.

July 2, 2008

Fishing continues to be hit or miss out of Grand Haven right now.  With the constantly changing wind directions, currents, and water temperatures the fishing has been unpredictable, but has still been good.  Good catches of Chinook Salmon in the 4-16 pound class have been caught along with some very nice 8-14 pound Steelhead.

The best water the last few days has been 30-65 feet of water and then also all the way out to 140 feet of water.  It is best to look at the current and past wind directions and also the surface water temperatures to find a good place to start fishing.  After a North or Northwest wind, the fish have been in the nearshore water and then after the Southwest wind blows the water warms back up and the fish move back offshore.  Downriggers 15-35 feet down, braid divers back 50-110 feet, and 3-7 colors of lead core are producing fish nearshore while downriggers 45-90 feet down, wire divers back 100-200 feet, 5-17 colors of lead core, and 150-450 feet of copper have been producing well offshore.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size.  The best three colors the last few weeks have been the Green Dolphin, Gator, and Blue Maui.  The Natural Born Killer, Mongoose, Double Orange Crush, Jawbreaker, Chip's Shanster, and Orange Killer have been producing fish as well.

Good luck and good catching to all!

Fishing continues to be great out of Grand Haven right now.  Limit catches of King Salmon are still occurring!  This is fantastic mid-June fishing!

The best water the last few days has been 80-130 feet of water and also 170-260 feet of water.  The nearshore bite is unpredictable due to the large amounts of bait, but the offshore bite has been reliable with great numbers of fish showing for it also.  The water continues to warm slightly everyday, but there has been some very nice 3-5 degree temperature breaks offshore, which have been holding a lot of fish.  Downriggers 40-85 feet down, wire divers back 120-190 feet, braid divers back 130-180 feet, 5-15 colors of lead core, and 125 ft.-450 ft. of copper are producing fish as well.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size.  The better colors have been Natural Born Killer, Carmel Dolphin, Green Dolphin, Mongoose, Double Orange Crush, Double Kevorkian, and Blue Machine.  A few larger Kings have been biting flasher/fly combinations on wire divers and the deep downrigger as well.  An 11 inch Pro-Troll White/Pearl Fishscale HotChip flasher with either a Frosted Fern Rapture Fly or an Oceana Rapture Fly has been working well for a few fish every morning.  Also, an 8 inch Pro-troll Chrome/Chartreuse flasher with a Citron Rapture Fly or Green No-See-Um Rapture Fly and an 8 inch Pro-Troll Chartreuse/Glow flasher has been working well with the Citron Rapture Fly as well.

Fishing continues to be fantasic out of Grand Haven right now.  Limit catches of King Salmon are still occurring!  This is fantastic June fishing!

The best water the last few days has been 85-105 feet of water and also 170-230 feet of water.  The nearshore bite is unpredictable due to the large amounts of bait, but the offshore bite has been reliable with great numbers of fish showing for it also.  The water has warmed slightly over the last few days.  Downriggers 50-85 feet down, wire divers back 120-190 feet, braid divers back 130-180 feet, 5-15 colors of lead core, and 125 ft.-450 ft. of copper are producing fish as well.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size.  The last couple days, anything with Blue on it has been key, even though earlier in the weekend it was orange.  The best two colors the last couple days have been the Blue Machine and Blue Maui Stingrays!  These two spoons have been accounting for over half of our catches.  Fishing is fantastic right now!  Get out and enjoy the limit catches of King Salmon being caught!  Good luck and good catching to all!

Fishing continues to be hit or miss in Grand Haven.  Fantastic catches were reported a couple days ago with much slower action occurring today.  The water is still quite chilly, making the fishing inconsistent and unpredicateble.  Better reports of catches are occurring south of Grand Haven near Saugatuck, so the fishing should only continue to improve as the water temperatures continue to rise.

The best water has been 160-220 feet of water, with the best action coming around 170-180 feet.  Downriggers 65-bottom are producing salmon shallower and lake trout deeper.  Wire divers back 150-300 feet, 3-15 colors of lead core, and 125 ft.-450 ft. of copper are producing fish as well.  Lake Trout continue to make up the majority of the catch, with kings, cohos, and steelhead mixed in.

The best lures of choice have been Stinger spoons in the Stingray size.  The better colors have been Blue Dolphin, Double Kevorkian, Blue Cory's Bait, Blue Veggies, Mixed Veggies, and Yellow Machine.  A few larger Kings have been biting flasher/fly combinations as well.  An 8 inch Pro-troll White/Glow flasher with a Last Supper Rapture Fly and an 8 inch Stinger NBK Pro-Troll flasher has been working well with the Green No-See-Um Rapture Fly as well.

As of right now, it looks like a great weekend for the Grand Haven Offshore Challenge fishing tournament!  Good luck and good catching to all!!!!

Captain Jon Selbig

May 4, 2008

Fishing continues to remain slow in Grand Haven. Catches over the weekend ranged from 2-5 fish per boat, mainly all nice 6-12 pound Kings. The best water was in 40-42 feet of water. Downriggers 18-37 feet down, divers back 60-90 feet and 3-8 colors of Lead core all produced bites. Regular-sized Stinger spoons accounted for all our bites, as long as it had some sort of orange on it. For example, double orange crush, tangerine, jawbreaker, and sunburst worked well. The water is good at 44-46 degrees and bait was found in numerous locations. Fishing should continue each day this week with better fishing occurring by next weekend. Fishing is shaping up to be fantastic with our prime and peek Grand Haven spring bite occurring in two weeks! Good Luck and good catching to all!!!

April 27, 2008

I hope everyone had a good winter and is ready to get back out on the big pond!  I will continue to provide you with up-to-date reports as often as I can, throughout the entire fishing season.  As of right now, I personally won't be on the lake until late this week and then this upcoming weekend.

From what I have heard, fishing out of Grand Haven has been hit or miss.  Earlier in the week, catches of up to 12 fish per boat were common, but then the next day you were lucky to get a bite.  So, as of right now, the fishing should continue to be hit or miss until the wind and water temperatures begin to stabilize.

The perch fishing out of Grand Haven has countinued to improve over the past week as many larger sized perch catches were being reported.  This should continue to stabilize and improve over the next few weeks as well.

I will continue to provide you with up-to-date information once I experience it first-hand or are given some quality and reliable reports!

Good Luck and good catching to all!!!

Captain Jon Selbig
