Here we go again. The NW wind did a job on things Tuesday and the water is cold in front. The cold water has brought the baitfish and decent numbers of our favorite predators in close to shore along with it.
Theres still plenty of space between fish out there but with the help of the warm water the search is a little easier.
A quick check of the buoy in Port Sheldon shows the bottom has warmed up over 12 degrees in the last 5 days and the fishing has warmed up with it.
This past Saturday though we kicked off our season with our first trip and it was reasonably good
If you happen to see my wife around town, tell her I was right! The fact that it was about the run (I predicted it would happen now) and nothing that she cares about doesn't matter, I just want it to go on record that it happened.
The recent warm weather has made for some pretty decent fishing out on the Big Lake. Catches have still varied widely but empty coolers have been rare even for the guys that don't get out very often.
After the rain and wind this week, a few boats have been out and found fish stretched out from 120 - 240 FOW
Hello,
Mom says it's ok for me to speak again because I finally have something nice to say! Decent numbers of fish have finally moved into the Grand Haven area and I can pack my "Top 10 reasons they're not biting" list away for the rest of the season.
Are you ready for some fishing? Hope so because the Salmon Festival is this weekend!
Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water another cold front arrives. The recent north winds chilled the water and messed up the swimming but didn't take the fun out of the good fishing we've been enjoying lately.
Holland/Port Sheldon---Salmon anglers have been having good luck fishing water 120-170 with best water being 120-140.
Fishing has been slow to fair on the lake this week but a couple of patterns have emerged.
Fishing on Lake Michigan is not bad for mid-June. It's actually about normal for this time of year but the lake trout have been hiding and salmon over 3 lbs have been in pretty short supply.
A quick update to yesterday's report. The strong north winds have done their job and swung the current around 180 degrees.
It's seems Mother Nature wanted us fisherman to be with our mothers or wives this weekend. Thankfully though the weather held out earlier this week and there was some very good fishing to be had ahead of this cold front.
Hello again!
It’s been a long winter and a unique spring (that's the nicest thing I can think of to say about this spring up until about a week ago).
Salmon anglers out of G.Haven/Muskegon have been doing well, since the water has cooled again.
Fishing has been great this week!
A short update for the Big Lake boat anglers. Last night we found some really nice kings with a few steelhead from 170 - 190 feet of water
Salmon fishing has been great at both G.Haven and Muskegon.
Grand Haven - Salmon anglers are fishing 110-170 and downrigger depth is 30 - bottom.
Salmon Fishing at Grand Haven and Muskegon has slowed from week to week. Anglers are finding more fish north of Muskegon.
The roller coaster weather pattern lately has made the fishing a bit more challenging lately. This past weekend provided lots of opportunities to catch up on your rest if you weren't lucky enough to find a pocket of fish and stick with them.
On Lake Michigan, fishing is definitely slowing down but there are still plenty of fish out there waiting for you. Catches the last few days have ranged from 5 to 15 fish among the group of guys I talk to.

Anglers are still doing well in the 150-250 water and downrigger depth has not changed.
Grand Haven--Salmon anglers are still having good luck with kings and Cohos. Water depth is 150-220 with 200 being the best. Downrigger depth is 85-155. Divers are back 200-250ft. White paddles with blue or green flies. Blue spoons regular size.
...the fishing is still excellent. Even better though is that people fishing from the pier with ale wives are able to enjoy the fishing too as abundant baitfish around the piers have pulled hungry salmon in towards shore over the last week.
If you're boats all set to go, GO! The kings are here already and limits are being taken off of Grand Haven right now.
I hope you've had an enjoyable winter and you're as anxious for spring as I am!
It's been a while but I didn't think you wanted to hear about how every time I wanted to go fishing the weather wouldn't cooperate and I wound up chasing ducks or deer instead.
Grand Haven/Muskegon-At both ports stealhead are being caught off the pier. It is still "hit and miss" and spawn is working best.
Grand Haven-Boat anglers when the weather has allowed have been fishing from 100-200', but the best water depth has been150'. Anglers are still catching kings, but they have been deep in the water column.

While last weeks wild weather certainly changed the water conditions, it did nothing to slow down the fishing.
For those that have been fortunate enough to get out lately the fishing has been excellent. Less than ideal water temperatures in the mid 60's have forced us to fish deeper down than we'd like but it's not slowed the fish down a bit.
Grand Haven/Muskegon----Salmon anglers at both ports are fishing water 80'-150' and downrigger depth is 80'-150'.
Grand Haven--Salmon anglers have been fishing the Grand River channel and all the way out to 300'.

Get on the water Saturday as it looks like the best opportunity of the weekend for decent water conditions and good fishing (although you may have to dodge a few lightning bolts in the morning).
Grand Haven--Boat anglers have been having great success fishing for salmon. The majority of the catch are kings and Cohos.
I'm glad I'm writing a report and not a forecast. I thought I'd better offer a short update as the water warmed up off of Grand Haven and the fish moved again.
Fishing out of Grand Haven right now is GREAT! Boats are coming in with good numbers for fish and good size also.
It's a great time to be fishing in this area of the lake! Plenty of action and some very big fish, 20 - 25 lbs, have been the rule for the past 5 or 6 days now.
Just a quick update before the weekend. Fish yesterday and this morning were pretty evenly divided between the 45 and 130 ft depths. There is a lot of bait in the stained shallow waters with plenty of big fish keeping a close eye on them.
Grand Haven---Water is very warm and fishing is still tough for salmon anglers, but best water depth is 70'-130' and downrigger depth is 30'-90' down.
Here we go again. The fish are moving in every direction this week and keeping up with them has been tricky. Early this week fishing slowed down but fair catches were had in the 100 - 130 foot depth range fishing from 50 ft to bottom on the usual assortment of baits.
Grand Haven---Boat anglers are starting to struggle catching salmon and trout. Water is getting warm and fish are on the move. Water depth is 110'-140' and downrigger depth is 40'-100'.
Fishing remained fair to good during this latest stretch of hot weather. We have a good thermo present with cool water still present from 50' on down and decent numbers of fish can be found in a wide area feeding close to this depth.

They're biting everywhere right now! The flies have bitten my ankles, arms, knees... Actually that's a pretty good summation of the fishing too as this morning saw fair catches of fish in the depth ranges of 30 - 65 , 130 - 170 and also from 200 - 230 feet of water.

Remember how I mentioned the fish could easily move out or head for the beach after the east winds late last week? They landed in 60 - 80 feet of water and I didn't.

Grand Haven--Pier angling is very slow. Anglers are still trying for browns, steelhead, and walleye, but not having much luck...
Happy Mothers Day to any mothers that might be reading this and consider it a reminder to my fellow fisherman if that may have slipped your mind...
