Fishing Reports

Fishing was pretty decent most of this week with a few double digit catches brought to the dock. The fish in the 200 - 280 foot range provided the most action. Quite a few steelhead up to 13 lbs are showing up in the cooler but the bulk of the action is still being provided by kings of all year classes. The Blue Dolphin colored spoons have remained the most popular baits this week but the Fuzzy Bear Ali-Gator and Green Dolphins were solid choices too. Most of the bites are coming on rods trolling the 45 - 75 foot depth range on riggers, divers, coppers and lead cores but we took nice kings down as far as 130' on Wednesday and kings and steelhead on half cores and high divers covering the 20' - 30' range as well. The high baits tended to have quite a bit of orange on them and dodgers with Spin-n-glo's and Dreamweaver Paddles with flies worked well on the deepest rods. A big key to success for us was a 3.0 - 3.2 mph over ground speed on a due west heading. We didn't turn around until we went at least 10 minutes without any action and that took us all the way from 208 to 276 feet of water.

The walleye fishing trip my son took earlier this week was successful too. He caught several keepers. We had those and a dozen bluegills that he caught on a popper fishing Sterns Bayou Wednesday afternoon for lunch yesterday. Just one more really good reason you should teach your kids to fish. The walleye have continued to favor drifting a jig tipped with a chunk of crawler on it over trolling with plugs. The best days are when the river starts to clear after a rain.

Have a safe and fun Fourth of July everyone!

Matt Whitney
