Fishing Reports

It's time for my first fishing report of 2019. After a couple of days on the Lake, I can say it's truly great to be back. At Grand Haven, perch fishing remains good although the schools are moving around and you will have to find them. When you do wigglers, spikes or minnows will get the job done. For trollers, the cold water has kept action slow. Some boats are heading south to Port Sheldon but staying closer to GH proved better for us. Most boats report a mixed bag of Kings, Coho and a few Browns fishing from the mouth of the Grand out to 90 FOW. The Kings are mostly in the mid teens with the Coho running 2 to 4 pounds. Small baits like the Dreamweaver Super Slims and the standard size Stingers in bright colors seem to be best. A DW SS in the Red Pepper pattern on a diver out 45 feet took 2 nice Kings of 13 and 17 pounds for us. The Jordo Stinger on 2 and 3 color lead core was our best for Coho. An examination of the stomach contents of fish caught near the Harbor showed why small baits were most productive. All contained small Chinook Salmon presumably those released from the net pens last week. One Coho weighing only 2.4 pounds had 4 baby Chinook plus other matter in his stomach. Good fishing! South winds should bring better fishing as the season moves on. Rich Wilson
