Fishing Reports

Hello again fellow anglers,

I've got good news to report. The nice weather we saw this past Saturday allowed me to launch my kayak and paddle around the sandbars. I managed to catch and release a nice 8lb lake trout, brought a 4lb male steelhead home for dinner and lost another very aggresive fish. I started fishing a little after 10:30 and was home shortly after 1 so I considered this a resounding success. Two of the fish hit a fire tiger patterned Willy's Worm and the steelhead took a small orange and gold Yeck spoon that we call the Alfonze Jr. I saw two other boats out and one of them looked like he was searching for perch but I have no idea if he found any. I've also learned that fishing has been fair to good out of Port Sheldon for the last couple of weeks with reports of some small salmon showing up in the catch.

There were quite a few people fishing on the North pier Saturday but, according to my neighbor that was trying his luck on the South pier, fishing was slow. There may have been an early bite but neither of us were awake to see it. I have to believe there were some fish being caught though as nobody appeared to be leaving and there was still a good size group fishing at noon.

The rain Sunday should trigger more fish to move further up into the rivers so success there should improve even with the colder weather currently being forecast for the week. Some areas are starting to open up for panfish as the ice gives way to open water but at this time I haven't heard from anyone that's been succesful.

Hope you have a good week and can get out fishing,

Matt Whitney
