Fishing Reports

Hello,

Holy big fish Batman! Week after week fish over 20 lbs continue to land in coolers at a pace that I haven't seen since the 80's. My sons were running the boat the other morning when a real trophy showed up that topped the 30 lb mark for us for the first time in over 15 years! The best part of this achievement is that we're hardly an exception as several 30 lb and a bunch of fish over 25 lbs were taken this week. The one constant part of these fish stories is that most of the hawgs are still being taken in the 100 fow range with meat rigs being another common component in the stories. Other hot baits that have been good for action lately are the pearl/black dot Tomic, green prism and Grinch pattern J plugs or Silver Hordes, and the usual list of spoons including the Orange Killer, Hello Darlin, modified and UV Blue Dolphins, Freakin' Veggies and Green Mongoose pattern spoons.

Standard sized baits continue to out perform magnums. These baits have been very good on cores and coppers as riggers have been quiet with clear and smooth water conditions in our area lately. For paddle/fly combos try the Lime Wire/Last Supper fly as a pair as it has been very steady on 450'

coppers and deeper riggers. Watch your speed this weekend as changing winds and currents have made finding a good course a top priority early in the trip.

The cool weather and north winds on their way promise to help the pier anglers see more perch and salmon by early next week but for the moment things are slow by the channel. Watch the Port Sheldon buoy temps and when it shows temps in the upper 50's above 40 feet it'll be worth a trip to check for good fishing on the pier.

As a final and sad note to this week's report I'd like to extend our sympathies and prayers to the family of Kevin Caldwell of Moonlighter Charters. Kevin passed away unexpectedly Wednesday night after a great day of fishing that morning.

Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend and good luck finding one of the many linkers in our area!

Matt
